Undoing the Displacement of my Belief (2016)

6 min 10 secVideo

This video work meditates on the enduring struggle to disentangle religious identity from political ideology, a tension acutely felt within many Muslim communities, particularly among Arab Muslims. The act of attempting to extract the white salt brick from the center of the green salt slab becomes representative of the persistent yet elusive effort to separate faith from being mobilized as front for political ideologies.  This conflation renders separation impossible, yet the struggle persists, even in abstraction.

A distorted Friday sermon echoes in the background, its content unintelligible but its strong tone unmissed. This dissonance shifts focus from the message's clarity to its visceral impact, reflecting on how belief, rhetoric, and identity are mediated through both presence and absence.
