Making & Unmaking of a People (2015)
150 x 300 cm
Mixed media installation, wood, inkjet print on paper, accompanied with a booklet
A visual and interactive commentary on the imagined geographies and identities of modern nation states of the Arab world resultant of colonial agendas. The work revolves around the 1916 Arab revolution flag from which all Arab flags are derived, the events around the Sykes-Picot agreement to the rise of ISIS. Viewers can ‘play’ with the pieces which can be put together in different variations making one of the flags of the Arab states every time a piece is changed. Every move makes a new identity, a new broder and a new nation.
