Losing My Jihadism (2017)
3 min 30 secVideo Losing My Jihadism is an archive-driven experimental video that interrogates the complex entanglements of political Islamism and the visual lexicon of national and ideological propaganda across the Arab region and the broader Muslim world. This work navigates the semiotics of state-crafted imagery, where religious symbolism and cultural identity are meticulously interwoven to construct hegemonic narratives. It probes the mechanisms through which such visual regimes legitimize the synthesis of supposed homogenous identities, questioning the historical fractures and erasures embedded within these curated representations.
At its core, the piece reflects on the epistemological violence inherent in the formation of political myths—where belief, belonging, and power converge. The title, Losing My Jihadism, is borrowed from an article by Saudi writer Mansour Al-Nogaidan, serving as both a point of departure and a provocation on the personal and collective disillusionment with ideological absolutism.
